This an indian ceremony which is performed at the 7th
month of the first pregnancy. There are times when this is performed at the 5th
or 9th month. This occurs at the matrimonial home of the women, The woman is
dressed as a bride, complete with the jewelley, peer - bindis on the forehead
etc.
Ceremony details
Maternal parents will provide
- sari
- peer - bindis on forehead
- watch/bracelet for the son in law
- 7 peices fruits - which includes 1 pkt whole wheat, coconut, dry fruit, and fresh fruit
- flower garland(har)
- flower head piece (moor)
- money for nived (£25.25)
- money/shirt for the brother in law that 'slaps' the daughter
- coconut of the brother in law that 'slaps' the daugher (this will be in the chhaab)
- laani for the invitees
- sari for the grooms side of the family that do the ceremony (usually, mother-in-law, grand mother in law & the lady that does the khoro)
- green blouse
The girls sister in law will make a 'rakhri' (panch masi)
which is a black piece of cloth which is sewn as bracelet to tie on the right
hand wrist. This has 2 things inside it 4 rasta soil (chhar rasta ni dhur,
hanuman mari ) and on top u put , kori (sea shell) , piece of metal. This is
meant to ward off evil spirits.
Ceremony details
- cover patlo with either red,green or white cloth
- place kur devi photo on it
- provide offereing's to kur devi (lapsi for Solanki's)
- light divo and agarbati
The actual ceremony
- The expectant mother should keep a fast till the ceremoy is over
- Expectant mother should wear a green blouse with any sari in the morning
- The sister in law should make her wear the rakhri on the right hand wrist
Once the maternal family have arrived with the saris and
stuff the expectant mother should get reeady.
- 5 ladies would put yoghurt, milk, sugar, ghee (chaina madh/pancham vrat) in the expectant mothers hair
- she would then go for a bath and wash her hair (note the mother is not allowed to wash her hair for 7 months)
- After bathing the expectant mother would not be allowed to sit down and would wear her blouse with the hooks at the back and wear her sari / this has no changed and they wear the sari blouse the proper way !
- She would not be allowed to comb her hair or dry it
- Need to take out peer
- Her inside chero would need to be long as she would be transfering the 7 pieces of offering
- The other woman that would be performing the ceremony would need to be married and had kids and her outside chero would need to be long
- They would place the 7 offerings in lady chero and transfer it to expectant mothers chero
- It needs to be done 7 times (1 time is in both cheros once)
- Once complete - ends in expectant mothers khoro transferred into thali
- brother in law the is called to slap the expectant mother 7 times on cheek with kanku hands
- he then takes coconut and breaks it by saying baby is ours and coconut is yours
- husband is then called and he is given watch/bracelet
- the couple then sit and take their blessings and play with a baby
- couple need to eat all the fruit and lapsi
- the whole what will be ground up and made into lapsi at the chhati
- girl will go to her parents house and they will put oil in her hair.
- sukesh and sister in law will need to come and collect her later
